What is New Student Convocation (NSC)?
“Convocation (Latin 'calling together' is a group of people formally assembled for a special purpose.”
As a first quarter student, you are invited to attend New Student Convocation. Most instructors will be bringing their students to the event but you will need to confirm with instructors before attending.
New Student Convocation is a half day event in which over 300 fellow newly enrolled South Seattle students gather together for the upcoming academic year. This event is a mixture of ceremonial beginnings and practical information to welcome you to South Seattle.
South Seattle Community College’s 4th Annual New Student Convocation (formerly First Friday) is now being held on the afternoon of President’s Day (Thursday, September 22, 2011). New Student Convocation is for newly enrolled first quarter students and their families.

What are the goals of our new student convocation?
- To prepare students for academic life
- To develop leadership skills early on in order to get the most out of their college experience
It is vital for students to succeed in higher education, as well as learn those leadership skills that will not only benefit students in their pursuits, but also the larger communities from which they come.

From our students:
“I am very happy there is so much positive reinforcement happening so early, right when we need it the most. People who know tricks and formulas to success in college. I feel as though I can ask anyone for help, and I will get it.”
“I’ve never been to a convocation but I think it has really helped me into the college mindset. I’m so glad my teacher brought me here.”
“This was a great opportunity to learn about different ways I could improve my studying and how to be more successful in college, and I am very happy I went.”
